The author wasn't feeling it with the former two images, wanting instead a more figurative approach, which is aligned with the nature of his work. Since the poems are so much about the human condition, it makes sense to include figures engaged in some conflict in the imagery. I understand.
The poems are about loss, detachment and reconnecting with life through pursuit and observance of beauty. The imagery is derived from some of the more profound sections of the book.
